History of Acupuncture in the USA

Please note that as far as Acupuncture being known in the USA, it all began with New York Times reporter James Reston,  who in 1971, developed appendicitis while in Bejing, China. He had surgery the usual route and then he developed post operative pain.

He was asked if he wanted to try acupuncture for the post-operative pain. He did, and the rest is history, as they say. He was so amazed at the pain relief without the use of western drugs that he wrote an article about it in the New York Times. So, that is when Acupuncture was first splashed accross the minds of the American public. Prior to that time, Acupuncture was mostly performed by Chinese Practitioners, on people of Chinese descent, in Chinatown, along with a few hippies.

So even though its been around for over a millenia in China, its only been here in the U.S. for 45 years. So that is why you have not heard that much about it.

Chinese Medicine did not begin here in this country like MD medicine, which in its current form has been around since 1920 (92 years old), and Chiropractic Medicine since 1897 (115 years old). So it is still in its early years in terms of scrutiny by the western scientific mind.

All new scientific endeavors are considered 'radical' until they have withstood the test of time through continued examination by the scientific community. This is the phase that Acupuncture is undergoing right now in the west.   But after 4-5,000 years of ongoing clinical testing and repeated observations on an entire nation, the Chinese do not need the West's idea of evidence. They have more than enough to show their own medicine is effective.

In addtion, there are about 800,000 MDs in the USA, approximately 80,000 Chiropractors in the USA, and at present only about 15-20,000 Acupuncturists in the USA. But we are continuing to grow in numbers every year as more and more people seek different and 'new' ways to have their health concerns addressed.

Note that currently over 90% of all of the scientific literature done in China on Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine has still not been translated into English.
